As the South Westmeath Hospice committee continue to raise and enhance public awareness regarding matters pertinent to the future of the palliative care unit in Athlone, a welcome development will occur on Thursday evening (September 26), as the HSE has formally invited the local volunteer group to meet with the Head of Social Care, Mr. Jude O’Neill, as negotiations pertaining to the future of the facility commence in earnest.

The South Westmeath Hospice Committee has announced details of their first ‘Save YOUR Hospice’ campaign event. The committee along with their supporters will host South Westmeath’s biggest ever coffee morning on Saturday, September 21, in Athlone GAA Clubhouse from 10am to 2pm.

The planned closure by the HSE of the South Westmeath Hospice palliative care unit in Athlone has been shelved. The news was confirmed by Minister for Health, Simon Harris, following a meeting led by Minister of State, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran at which Longford/Westmeath Fine Gael Deputy Peter Burke and hospice committee members, Joe Whelan and Clare Lennon, were also in attendance.

The Defence Forces Gala Concert in aid of South Westmeath Hospice and ONE Fuchsia appeal will take place in the Radisson Blu Athlone next Thursday, August 22, at 7pm. The concert will feature performances by the Band 2 Brigade, renowned singer Raphaela Mangan, and Athlone A Capella Choir.

On Thursday August 22, the Defence Forces in association with the Radisson BLU Hotel Athlone, will host a gala benefit concert.

I will begin this column by noting and paying respect to the late US president George Bush who died recently. I have not any particular memories about him but I have always felt that he was a most honourable person, and that seems to be the general opinion now upon his passing. I noted at his funeral home that his faithful dog who he has had for years was keeping watch on the rug outside, and I thought well, the late president must have had very admirable human traits. May he rest in peace.

A coffee morning aimed to raise much needed funds for the South Westmeath Hospice and homecare service will take place on Thursday, September 20.

The South Westmeath Hospice have been overwhelmed by the response to their annual Sunflower Day which took place last Thursday, Friday and Saturday at shops and supermarkets all around Athlone.
